My Process
For illustration and commissioned work, I submit a tonal pencil drawing for client approval before going to paint. This allows me to set the composition so I know where all the lights and darks will be. I also decide where the white of the paper will remain. This drawing also allows the client to see how the image will look in a layout and make any necessary revisions before the final illustration.
For exhibition work, the process is less structured and more intuitive. Inspiration comes from nature, natural forms, dried flowers, color combinations and patterns. Sometimes I work from sketchbook drawings or watercolor sketches. Other times I start with a combination of colors and work spontaneously.
